FAQ: Walk & Roll Challenge 

The Safe Routes Walk & Roll Challenge encourages students to walk, bike, or roll to school safely, with fun prizes for participation. Walking, biking, or rolling to and from school isn’t just fun, it also promotes physical wellness, improves cognitive abilities, teaches critical social skills, encourages independence, and lowers anxiety and depression. Additionally, it cuts down on traffic around school zones and helps improve our air quality!

Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions about the Walk & Roll Challenge.

    1. What is the Walk & Roll Challenge?
    2.  A. The Walk & Roll Challenge is a Safe Routes program funded by UDOT that rewards students with free prizes for walking, biking, and rolling to school. Students track the days that they walked, biked, or rolled to school, then submit them online by the end of each month. The more frequently a student walks, bikes, or rolls to school, the greater their chances of winning sweet prizes.

    4. When does the Walk & Roll Challenge happen?
    5. A. The Walk & Roll Challenge runs for nine months from September to May.

    7. What age/grade range can participate?
    8. A.Students from grades kindergarten to 8th grade (ages 5-14) can participate in the Walk & Roll Challenge.

    10. Where can I find a safe route to walk or roll?
    11. A. Every elementary, middle and junior high school is required to create a Safe Routes Plan. Click here to find your safe route. If you don’t see one, please contact your school’s administration.

    13. Where can my student submit the days they walked, biked or rolled?
    14. A. Submissions are only accepted on the form on Safe Routes’ Walk & Roll webpage, here.

    16. What are the prizes?
    17. A. Winners receive either a scooter or bike, and a helmet. The specific scooter or bike is chosen at will, given the supply, by Safe Routes.

      1. How is a winner chosen?
      2. A. Each time your student walks, bikes, or rolls to school, they’ll be entered for an additional chance to win a sweet prize as long as they submit their progress online by the end of the month. The more a student walks, bikes, or rolls, the higher chance they have of winning.

      4. When are winners chosen?
      5. A, Winners are drawn the first week of each month at random from eligible participants. Winners are only selected if they are located in the state of Utah. Total entries per month may not exceed the amount of days a child is in school.

      7. How will I know if my student won?
      8. A. Winners will be notified at the beginning of every month. If your student is a winner, Safe Routes will notify you via phone or email to confirm your child’s age for helmet sizing and arrange delivery of the prize.

      10. How can my student track their progress?
      11. A. Safe Routes offers a downloadable progress chart to help students keep track of their walking, biking, or rolling days. You can find the chart in English or Español.

      13. Can my charter school, private school, or homeschool student participate?
      14. A. Students in charter schools and private schools can participate. Homeschool students cannot participate.

      16. Does it count if my student walks to and from the bus?
      17. A. Yes, walking, biking, or rolling to the bus counts.

      19. Is there a way to get reminders?
      20. A. Text WALK to 833-277-0641 to receive reminders to submit your student’s days at the end of the month. Follow Safe Routes on social media for additional reminder posts and updates.

      3. A. Parents who encourage their kids to walk, bike, or roll are also entered into a drawing at the same time to incentivize their kids to participate and receive prizes of their own. It’s our way of saying thank you for helping keep kids active and healthy!

      9. A. We post photos of the monthly winners on the Safe Routes website and on social media, with parental permission.
