Resources for Parents

As a parent, your child’s journey to school is the first and last “lesson” of their day, and Safe Routes Utah is here to ensure that lesson is one of safety, health, and independence. Choosing active transportation, like walking, biking, or scooting, does more than just reduce the chaotic morning drop-off line; it improves air quality around our schools, boosts student focus in the classroom, and builds physical confidence. By utilizing our program’s vetted safety maps and the Walk & Roll Challenge, you aren’t just getting your child from point A to point B, you are joining a statewide movement to reclaim our neighborhoods for our kids. Whether you are a busy commuter or have time to lead the way, there is a place for every family to help create a safer, more connected path to school.

How You Can Get Involved

Consult the Safe Routes Map

Visit our interactive map tool to identify the safest, UDOT-vetted paths to your child’s school, including locations of crossing guards and sidewalks.

Walk& Roll challenge

Join the Walk & Roll Challenge

Help your child track their active trips on their progress chart. Entering the monthly drawing only takes a moment and puts them in the running for high-quality bikes and scooters.

Start or Join a "Walking School Bus"

Coordinate with neighbors to walk or bike in a supervised group. It’s a great way to share the responsibility of supervision while building a neighborhood community.

Volunteer as a Safety Advocate

Work with your school’s PTA or administration to provide feedback on the annual Safe Routes Plan or assist during “Walk to School Day” events.

Practice the
"2-V-1" Rule

Take ten minutes to ensure your child’s helmet fits correctly, 2 fingers above the eyebrows, straps forming a “V” under the ears, and 1 finger under the chin strap.
